Nervous about your first class? Here's exactly what happens, what to wear, and how to make your trial class a great experience.
Walking into a martial arts school for the first time can feel intimidating. It shouldn't. Here's what a typical first class looks like at Defence Lab Kyle.
Before class
Arrive about 10 minutes early. We'll welcome you, show you around, and answer any questions. Parents are welcome to watch kids' classes.
What to wear
Comfortable athletic clothing and a water bottle. No uniform or gear is needed for your trial.
Warm-up
Classes start with a dynamic warm-up to raise your heart rate and loosen up — jogging, mobility, and light bodyweight movements.
Technique
Instructors teach a few core techniques — like a stance, a punch combination, or a kick — and break them down step by step.
Drills
You'll practice the techniques on pads or with a partner. Beginners are paired thoughtfully and coached closely.
Games or conditioning
Kids' classes often include skill-based games. Teen and adult classes may finish with a short conditioning round.
Cool-down
We finish with stretching and a quick wrap-up. Many students leave feeling energized and proud.
Tips for a great first class
- Don't worry about getting everything right. Nobody does on day one.
- Go at your own pace and take breaks when needed.
- Ask questions — that's what instructors are there for.
