Kickboxing for Beginners: Everything to Know Before Your First Class
October 24, 2026 · 3 min read
New to kickboxing? Here's what you'll learn, what to wear, how hard it is, and how to get the most out of your first few weeks.
Kickboxing is one of the most beginner-friendly martial arts — and one of the most fun. If you're thinking about trying it, here's what to expect.
What you'll learn first
- Stance and guard. How to stand balanced and protect your head.
- Basic punches. Jab, cross, hook, and uppercut.
- Basic kicks. Front kick, roundhouse, and knee strikes.
- Footwork. Moving forward, back, and side to side without crossing your feet.
- Simple combinations. Linking two to four strikes together.
Do I need to be in shape?
No. Kickboxing gets you in shape — you don't need to be in shape to start. A good instructor scales intensity to your level, so you can rest when you need to and push when you're ready.
Will I have to spar?
Not at our school. Sparring is optional and only introduced when a student is ready, always with safety gear and controlled intensity. Many people train for fitness and self-defense and never spar.
What to wear and bring
Comfortable athletic clothes, a water bottle, and a positive attitude. If you continue, we'll help you with gloves and uniform options.
Tips for your first month
- Train two to three times per week for steady progress.
- Focus on technique over power — power comes with good form.
- Hydrate and arrive a few minutes early.
- Ask questions. Instructors love curious students.
