10 Self-Defense Tips Every Parent Should Teach Their Kids
September 4, 2026 · 3 min read
Simple, age-appropriate safety and self-defense tips to help your child stay aware, speak up, and get help.
Kids don't need to be scared to be safe. These simple lessons build awareness and confidence.
The tips
- Know your full name, address, and a parent's phone number.
- Stay where a trusted adult can see you in public places.
- Identify safe helpers — police officers, store employees, and moms with kids.
- Use a big voice. Practice yelling "STOP!" or "I DON'T KNOW YOU!"
- Trust uncomfortable feelings and tell an adult.
- Never go anywhere with someone without checking with a parent first.
- Keep an arm's length from strangers.
- It's okay to say no to adults when something feels wrong.
- Run toward people, not away from them, when in danger.
- Tell a trusted adult about anything that makes them uncomfortable — always.
